How to use it

A double shot, straight or cut with milk

Our numbers for a double and a cortado, with Ovalware's own care notes. Pull the shot straight into the cup, add milk if you like, then let the dishwasher handle the rest.

Why only about 60 ml of milk? A cortado is roughly equal parts espresso and steamed milk. A double (about 60 ml) plus about 60 ml of milk fills the 120 ml cup, so pour the milk last and stop just short of the rim.

  1. Step 1

    Pull a double

    Pull a double, about 60 ml, straight into the cup. At 3.2 in tall, it fits under a spout with at least that much room.

  2. Step 2

    Add milk, or don't

    For a cortado, add about 60 ml of steamed milk. Ovalware says the double wall keeps the shot warm and your fingers cool.

  3. Step 3

    Wash

    Into the dishwasher. Ovalware lists the cups as dishwasher safe, recommends the top rack, and says they stack.

About these cups

Is there room for a double plus milk?

Yes. Each cup holds 120 ml (4 oz). Our recipe for a cortado, a double (about 60 ml) plus about 60 ml of steamed milk, fills it. A straight double leaves plenty of room.

Will it fit under my espresso machine?

Each cup is 3.2 inches (about 8 cm) tall, per Ovalware's listing. If your machine has at least that much room between the drip tray and the spout, it fits.

Does the handle get hot?

Not the way a single-wall cup does. Ovalware says the double wall keeps your fingers cool, even with a fresh shot inside, and the butterfly handle is part of that glass, not a separate piece.

Is it dishwasher and microwave safe?

Dishwasher, yes: Ovalware lists the cups as dishwasher safe and recommends the top rack. Microwave: Ovalware doesn't list them as microwave safe, so we don't either. Heat your milk separately, then pour it in.

What can I drink from it?

Espresso, straight or with milk. Ovalware lists the cups for espresso, lattes and milk, and at 120 ml they suit small drinks best, like a double or a cortado.

Set of 2 or Set of 4?

Same cups, same 120 ml. The Set of 4 works out to less per cup, and Ovalware says the cups stack for storage.

Is it fragile?

It's hand-blown borosilicate, and it's still glass: it will break if it's dropped on a hard surface. Stack and wash it with the care you'd give any glassware.
