Brewing the 1.5 L? Use 110 g of extra coarse grounds and fill to its MAX line. Ovalware says it serves 6 cups.

  1. Step 1

    Fill the filter

Add 85 g of coffee, ground extra coarse, to the steel filter. Use 110 g for the 1.5 L.

  2. Step 2

    Add water

Pour fresh water slowly over the grounds, up to the MAX line, so they all get wet.

  3. Step 3

    Steep

Cap it and set it in the fridge for 12 to 18 hours. No electricity needed.

  4. Step 4

    Serve

Lift out the filter and cap the pitcher again. Ovalware says the brew keeps up to 2 weeks in the fridge.

One 12 oz bag makes 4 batches in the 1.0 L. A bag is about 340 g, and each batch takes 85 g. In the 1.5 L, at 110 g a batch, it makes 3. Choose Whole Bean so you can grind it extra coarse.

Why it's in the Club

Glass and steel where your coffee sits

We carry this cold brew maker because Ovalware makes it from hand-blown borosilicate glass and 18/8 stainless steel, and lists the materials plainly, down to the silicone seal and base. The steel filter is reusable, so there's no paper to buy, and Ovalware says a batch keeps up to 2 weeks under its airtight seal.

Every product spec below comes from Ovalware's own listing and product photos. If the maker doesn't state a spec, we don't claim it.

In the box

Per Ovalware's listing
  • Glass pitcher

Hand-blown borosilicate in the size you choose, with a measurement scale, a MAX line and a silicone base.

  • 18/8 stainless steel filter

  • Steel cap

Stainless steel, with a BPA-free silicone seal that Ovalware calls airtight.

Not in the box: the kettle and coffee shown in some of Ovalware's photos.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

About this cold brew maker

Which size fits my fridge?

The 1.0 L stands 7.9 in tall and 4.6 in wide, per Ovalware. The 1.5 L is 5.5 in wide, but Ovalware lists two different heights for it, so we don't state one yet. If your shelf is tight, the 1.0 L is the safer pick.

How much coffee does a batch take?

Ovalware's dose is 85 g of extra coarse grounds for the 1.0 L and 110 g for the 1.5 L, with water to the MAX line. Ovalware says the 1.0 L serves 4 cups and the 1.5 L serves 6. A 12 oz bag of our coffee (about 340 g) makes 4 batches in the 1.0 L, or 3 in the 1.5 L.

Can I use pre-ground coffee?

Only if it's extra coarse to coarse, the grind Ovalware recommends. We don't state a grind size for our own Ground coffee, so for cold brew we suggest Whole Bean, ground extra coarse.

How long does it keep?

Up to 2 weeks in the fridge, per Ovalware, once you lift out the filter and cap the pitcher again. Our tip: taste it straight first, then pour it over ice or add water or milk if it's stronger than you like.

What does the coffee touch?

Glass and stainless steel while it steeps: a hand-blown borosilicate pitcher and an 18/8 stainless steel filter and cap. The cap's seal is BPA-free silicone, per Ovalware, and the pitcher stands on a silicone base.

Can I lay it down or take it with me?

Keep it upright. Ovalware calls the cap's seal airtight, but it doesn't say the pitcher is made to lie on its side or to travel.

Can I brew tea in it?

Yes. Ovalware says it brews loose-leaf tea too.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Yes, per Ovalware. Tip the grounds out of the filter and rinse it first.
