How it brews

Two cups of pour over in four steps

Ovalware's method with our numbers. Ovalware calls the open filter basket forgiving, so it makes an easy first pour over.

The ratio 1:16Coffee to water, by weight
Coffee 30gGround medium-fine
Water 480gAbout 2 cups
Water temp 200°FJust off the boil (93°C)

No scale? The Almighty Glass has bean marks at 15, 20, 30 and 40 g. Fill it to 30 and use about 2 cups (480 ml) of water.

  1. Step 1

    Measure

Fill the Almighty Glass to the 30 g bean mark, then grind medium-fine.

  2. Step 2

    Bloom

Set the filter in the carafe, add the grounds and wet them with about 60 g of water. Wait 30 seconds.

  3. Step 3

    Pour

Pour the rest in slow circles until you've added about 480 g in all. Aim to finish in 2 to 4 minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Serve

Lift the filter out by its tab and pour. The Almighty Glass holds the filter, or sits on the carafe as a lid.

  • Drains in under 2 minutes, or tastes weak? Grind a notch finer.
  • Takes over 4 minutes, or the filter clogs? Grind a notch coarser.
  • A little fine sediment in the last pour is normal with a metal filter. Leave the last sip in the carafe.

Bonavita Classic 1.0 L gooseneck electric kettle on its heating base with a digital control panel

No gooseneck? Any kettle works.

A gooseneck just makes the slow circles easier to control. The Bonavita Classic, which we also carry, has a pour-over preset and holds your set temperature for 60 minutes.

Our House Blend

Our flagship. Balanced and all-day drinkable

Ovalware recommends a light to medium roast, freshly ground. Our House Blend is a balanced medium roast with a syrupy body, and a steel filter lets that body into the cup.

Honey Process Coffee by Pure Coffee Club
Rather go single origin?

Ovalware says single-origin beans shine in pour over. Our Honey Process is a Costa Rica single origin, honey processed for a velvety, naturally sweet cup with low acidity. Whole Bean, 12 oz, $19.97.

Why it's in the Club

Glass, steel and no paper to throw away

We carry this pour over because Ovalware makes it from hand-blown borosilicate glass and 304 stainless steel, and lists the materials plainly, down to the silicone grip on the filter. The steel filter replaces paper for good.

Every product spec below comes from Ovalware's own listing and FAQ. If the maker doesn't state a spec, we don't claim it.

In the box

Per Ovalware's listing
  • 500 ml glass carafe

Hand-blown borosilicate glass with a measurement scale.

  • Dual-layer steel filter

Laser-cut 304 stainless steel outside, fine mesh inside, with a silicone grip and a lift tab.

  • The Almighty Glass

Hand-blown borosilicate with bean marks at 15, 20, 30 and 40 g. Holds the filter between pours and sits on the carafe as a lid.

Not in the box: the kettle and coffee shown in some of Ovalware's photos.

What touches your coffee

  • Borosilicate glass

The carafe and the Almighty Glass, both hand-blown.

  • 304 stainless steel

Both layers of the filter: laser-cut outside, fine mesh inside.

  • Silicone

The grip around the filter's rim.

BPA-free, per Ovalware. No paper filters to buy.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

About this pour over

Is the Almighty Glass included?

Yes. Ovalware sells this as a 3-piece set: the 500 ml glass carafe, the dual-layer steel filter and the Almighty Glass, which measures beans, holds the filter and works as a lid. The kettle in some of Ovalware's photos isn't included.

How much coffee does it make?

Up to 500 ml (17 oz), which Ovalware calls enough for 2 standard servings. Our recipe uses 30 g of coffee and 480 g of water.

Do I need a gooseneck kettle?

No. Any kettle works if you pour slowly. A gooseneck makes slow circles easier to control, and the Bonavita Classic we carry has a pour-over preset.

Will there be sediment in my cup?

A little fine sediment can settle at the bottom. Ovalware calls that the trade-off for a metal filter that lets coffee's natural oils through. Grind medium-fine and leave the last sip in the carafe.

Can I use paper filters instead?

Yes. Ovalware says the carafe works with most branded drippers and filters, so you can set a paper-filter dripper on it any time you want a lighter cup.

Can I use pre-ground coffee?

Yes, if it's close to medium-fine, the grind Ovalware recommends. We suggest Whole Bean so you can grind it fresh for each brew.

How do I clean it?

Tap out the grounds and rinse the filter after each brew. Ovalware says it's dishwasher safe. To wash by hand, use a soft sponge and a neutral detergent, with no abrasive cleansers or sponges on the glass. A soft bottle brush reaches the carafe's narrow neck.

Can it go on the stove or in the microwave?

Ovalware doesn't list it for either, so heat your water in a kettle. It's borosilicate, but it's still glass. Ovalware asks you to handle it with care and not to strike the inside of the carafe with a metal utensil.
