How to use it

Pour over through steel, in four steps

Our pour-over numbers, the same ones we give for the Ovalware Pour Over. Ovalware recommends a medium-fine grind for this filter.

Inner mesh 40µmFine mesh inside, laser-cut steel outside
The ratio 1:16Coffee to water, by weight
Coffee 30gGround medium-fine
Water 480gJust off the boil, about 2 cups
Brew time 2 to 4minFirst pour to last drip

Brewing one big mug? Keep the 1:16 ratio: 25 g of coffee to 400 g of water makes about 350 ml.

  1. Step 1

    Measure

Weigh 30 g of coffee and grind it medium-fine, the grind Ovalware recommends.

  2. Step 2

    Bloom

Set the filter on your carafe, add the grounds and wet them with about 60 g of water just off the boil. Wait 30 seconds.

  3. Step 3

    Pour

Pour the rest in slow circles until you've added about 480 g in all. Aim to finish in 2 to 4 minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Rinse

Lift the filter off, tap out the grounds and rinse it under running water. It's ready for the next brew.

  • Drains fast, or tastes thin? Grind a notch finer.
  • Silty cup, or the filter clogs? Grind a notch coarser.
  • A little fine sediment in the last pour is normal with a metal filter. Leave the last sip in the carafe.

Our Honey Process

Honey processed. Naturally sweet, low acidity

A dual-layer steel filter lets coffee's natural oils through for a fuller body. Our Honey Process, a velvety Costa Rica single origin with dried fruit and chocolate notes, leans into that body.

Why it's in the Club

Two layers of steel, no paper to buy

We carry this filter because Ovalware makes it from two layers of 18/8 (304) stainless steel, laser-cut outside and fine mesh inside, and publishes the mesh size: 40 µm. A BPA-free silicone rim rests it on most carafe edges, per Ovalware, and a quick rinse replaces the paper.

Every product spec below comes from Ovalware's own listing and FAQ. If the maker doesn't state a spec, we don't claim it.

In the box

Per Ovalware's listing
  • Dual-layer steel filter

Laser-cut 18/8 (304) stainless steel outside and fine mesh inside, with a BPA-free silicone rim, in the finish you choose. One filter, per the note on Ovalware's fit guide.

Not in the box: any carafe, kettle or coffee shown in Ovalware's photos.

What touches your coffee

  • 18/8 (304) stainless steel

Both layers: laser-cut outside, fine mesh inside.

  • Silicone

    The rim, BPA-free per Ovalware.

  • Titanium coating

On the Gold and Rose Gold finishes, per Ovalware.

Ovalware's listing doesn't describe the Aura Silver finish, so we make no claim about it yet.

The stronger option The trade-offNo mark: a matter of taste

Want a cleaner cup? Grind a notch coarser and leave the last sip in the carafe. A little sediment is the trade-off Ovalware names for a metal filter's fuller body.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

About this filter

Will it fit my carafe?

Ovalware's fit guide shows it on Hario drippers (size 02 and 03), Chemex brewers (6, 8 and 10 cup) and ceramic drippers (size 02 and 03), and notes it doesn't fit the Hario V60 Immersion Switch Dripper 03. Ovalware also says the silicone rim fits most carafe edges. It measures 5.12 x 5.12 x 5.12 in overall.

Will there be sediment in my cup?

A little fine sediment can settle at the bottom. Ovalware calls that the trade-off for a metal filter that lets coffee's natural oils through, which gives a fuller body than paper. Grind medium-fine, as Ovalware recommends, and leave the last sip in the carafe.

Can I use pre-ground coffee?

Yes, if it's close to medium-fine, the grind Ovalware recommends. We suggest Whole Bean so you can grind it fresh for each brew.

Is it one filter or a set?

One filter. The note on Ovalware's fit guide says the product comes with the stainless steel filter only, so the carafes and drippers in the photos aren't included.

Is it a replacement for the Pour Over's filter?

Ovalware hasn't said, so we don't claim it is. Both are dual-layer stainless steel with silicone at the rim, and the Ovalware Pour Over already comes with its own filter.

What's the difference between the finishes?

Silver is the stainless steel finish, and Gold and Rose Gold are titanium coated, per Ovalware. Ovalware's listing doesn't describe Aura Silver, or say how the coatings hold up over time, so we make no claim about either yet.

How do I clean it?

Tap out the grounds and rinse it under running water after each brew. For a deeper clean, Ovalware suggests a 30-minute soak in warm water and white vinegar. It's dishwasher safe, top rack, per Ovalware. It's metal, so keep it out of the microwave.
