How to use it

Brew straight into it, then pour at the table

Our numbers for a full batch at 1:16, with Ovalware's specs. Set your dripper on top, brew straight in, then lid it and pour.

Holds 600 or 800ml20 or 27 fl oz, per Ovalware
The ratio 1:16Coffee to water, by weight
Coffee 36gMedium-fine; 48 g for the 800 ml
Water 575gAbout 770 g for the 800 ml
Water temp 200°FJust off the boil (93°C)

Why not brew to the top line? The grounds hold back some water. With our recipe, 575 g of water gives about 500 ml in the 600 ml server, and 770 g gives about 675 ml in the 800 ml. Read it on the ml and oz scale.

  1. Step 1

    Set up

Set your dripper or filter on the server. Ovalware says it works with most drippers and filters.

  2. Step 2

    Measure

    Grind 36 g of coffee medium-fine for the 600 ml, or 48 g for the 800 ml.

  3. Step 3

    Brew

Pour about 575 g of water just off the boil, or 770 g for the 800 ml, and watch the batch rise on the ml and oz scale.

  4. Step 4

    Serve

Lift off the dripper, set the steel lid on and pour while it's hot.

  • Tastes sour or thin? Grind a notch finer.
  • Tastes bitter, or the dripper drains slowly? Grind a notch coarser.
  • Warming it up in the microwave? Take the steel lid off first.

Our brewing guidance. The lid is steel, so it never goes in the microwave.

Heat your water in a kettle

Ovalware's FAQ says no open flame under the server, so heat your water separately. The Bonavita Classic, which we also carry, holds your set temperature for 60 minutes and pours a slow, steady stream onto your dripper.

One 12 oz bag makes about 9 full batches in the 600 ml. A bag is about 340 g, and each batch takes 36 g. In the 800 ml, at 48 g a batch, it makes about 7. Choose Whole Bean so you can grind it medium-fine, fresh.

Why it's in the Club

Extra-thick glass, marked in ml and oz

We carry the Range Server because Ovalware makes it from hand-blown borosilicate glass, 2.5 mm thick by its own spec, with a stainless steel lid and an ml and oz scale. Ovalware's own FAQ is plain about its limits, too: no open flame, and it doesn't retain heat long-term.

Every product spec below comes from Ovalware's own listing and FAQ. If the maker doesn't state a spec, we don't claim it.

In the box

Per Ovalware's listing
  • Glass server

Hand-blown borosilicate with an ml and oz scale, in the size you choose.

  • Stainless steel lid

    With a BPA-free silicone seal.

Not in the box: any dripper, filter or coffee shown in Ovalware's photos.

What touches your coffee

  • Borosilicate glass

The server, hand-blown, 2.5 mm thick per Ovalware.

  • Stainless steel

    The lid.

  • Silicone

The seal on the lid, BPA-free per Ovalware.

Ovalware doesn't state the grade of the lid's stainless steel, so we don't either.

Glass server or thermal carafe, honestly

This serverThermal carafe
Keeps coffee hot Not for long, per Ovalware's FAQ Longer: holding heat is its job
See how much is left Clear glass with an ml and oz scale Usually opaque
Warm it back up Microwave the glass, steel lid off, per Ovalware Usually not: most are steel

The stronger option The trade-off

Pouring all morning? Brew straight into the server and pour while it's hot. If your coffee has to stay hot for hours, a thermal carafe is the better tool, and we'd rather say so up front.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

About this server

600 or 800 ml: how much coffee is that?

The 600 ml holds up to 20 fl oz and the 800 ml up to 27 fl oz, per Ovalware. Brewing straight in at 1:16, our recipes give about 500 ml (17 oz) in the 600 ml and about 675 ml (23 oz) in the 800 ml. That's about two 8 oz cups from the 600 ml, or nearly three from the 800 ml.

Will my dripper sit on it?

Ovalware's photos show it with Hario and Kalita Wave drippers and with stainless steel and ceramic drippers, and Ovalware says it works with most drippers and filters. It doesn't publish the size of the opening, so check your dripper's base if it isn't one of those.

Can it go in the microwave or on the stove?

The glass can go in the microwave with the steel lid off, per Ovalware. Never microwave the lid: it's steel. Ovalware's FAQ rates the glass from -30°C to 180°C (-22°F to 356°F) and says no open flame, and Ovalware doesn't list it for stovetop use, so heat your water in a kettle.

Does it keep coffee hot?

Not for long. Ovalware's own FAQ says it doesn't retain heat long-term, so we make no heat-retention claim. Brew straight into it and pour while it's hot.

What do the lines on the glass show?

An ml and oz scale, so you can read your batch as it brews. On the 600 ml, Ovalware's photo shows marks at 200, 400 and 600 ml and at 8, 12, 16 and 20 oz.

How sturdy is the glass?

Ovalware makes the body from extra-thick, hand-blown borosilicate glass, 2.5 mm thick. It's still glass, though, and it will break if it's dropped on a hard surface.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Yes. Ovalware lists it as dishwasher safe.
