Fahrenheit or Celsius? Bonavita quotes temperatures in °F, and its main photo shows the display reading 100C. In Celsius, the pour-over and French press settings we suggest are about 93°C and 90°C.

  1. Step 1

    Fill

Fill the kettle with fresh water, up to its 1.0 L capacity.

  2. Step 2

    Set

Pick one of the 6 presets, from green tea to a full rolling boil, or set your own temperature to the degree from 140°F.

  3. Step 3

    Hold

The 60-minute hold keeps the water at your set temperature while you grind and get ready.

  4. Step 4

    Pour

Bonavita made the gooseneck for pour over, French press and loose-leaf tea. For pour over, go slow and pour in circles to wet the grounds evenly.

Ovalware Pour Over set: a 500 ml glass carafe with a dual-layer steel cone filter, next to the Almighty Glass holding coffee beans

Pairs with the Ovalware Pour Over

Pour over is one of the brews Bonavita names for this kettle, and a gooseneck makes slow circles easy to control. The Ovalware Pour Over, which we also carry, makes 2 cups through a reusable steel filter.

Our Double French

Bold dark roast, sweet smoky finish

Bonavita names French press as one of the brews this kettle is made for, and our Double French is where we'd start: a bold dark roast with a sweet, smoky finish. Dark roasts extract quickly, so water a little below a full boil keeps that finish rich instead of harsh.

Set about 195°F, then steep 4 minutes. 30 g of Whole Bean, ground coarse, to 450 g of water (1:15), then press and pour right away. One 12 oz bag makes about 11 brews, and a full kettle covers two.

Why it's in the Club

The same precise heat, in four finishes

We carry the Cosmopolitan because it does one job precisely: it heats water to the temperature you set, to within a degree per Bonavita, and holds it for up to an hour. Bonavita lists the same core specs as the Classic, and the Cosmopolitan adds a round base and four finishes. Where Bonavita is silent, so are we.

Every product spec below comes from Bonavita's own listing and product photos. If the maker doesn't state a spec, we don't claim it.

What touches your water

  • 304 stainless steel

Named by Bonavita as one of the kettle's materials.

Bonavita's listing doesn't say which parts are made of it, so we don't either.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

About this kettle

Cosmopolitan or Classic?

Bonavita lists the same core specs for both: 1.0 L, 1200 W, 1-degree accuracy, six presets and a 60-minute hold. The Cosmopolitan costs $129.99 and comes in four finishes, with flush controls on a round base. The Classic costs $99.99 and comes in one finish, with a button panel on its base, so it's $30 less for the same heat specs.

What temperature for each of your coffees?

Our guidance: about 195°F (90°C) for a French press with our Double French, and about 200°F (93°C) for pour over with our House Blend or Honey Process. Bonavita doesn't publish what each preset is set to, so set the exact number yourself when it matters. If a cup tastes sour, go a few degrees hotter; if it tastes bitter, go a few degrees cooler.

What are the six presets?

Bonavita says they run from green tea to a full rolling boil, but its listing doesn't name the others or give their temperatures, so we don't either. You can always set your own temperature to the degree, starting at 140°F.

Is it good for tea too?

Yes. Bonavita names loose-leaf tea as one of the brews the gooseneck is made for, and the presets start at green tea.

What's the difference between the finishes?

Bonavita sells the Cosmopolitan in Stainless, Polished, Black and White, with one set of specs for all four. Its listing doesn't describe the finishes beyond their names, or say what the Black and White finishes are made of, so we make no claim about them yet.

What touches the water?

Bonavita names 304 stainless steel as one of the kettle's materials, but doesn't say which parts are which, so we make no claim beyond that.
